Making the transition from the 5-6 year old division to the 7-8 year old division often provides opportunities for lessons in maturity that teach the soccer players that a team is always better than two or three star players working as individuals. At the younger ages players tend to bunch around the ball and do not tend to spread out or look for the open player when attacking. Helping your players make this transition can be challenging. There are many drills found at several different websites that can help you train your players to make this difficult transition. One such drill is the 3v2 drill found at the website Inside Soccer. There is a short 3-minute video that demonstrates a drill that should help ease the transition for your players. You may notice that the 2 defenders tend to win early in this demonstration but, the 3 forwards/strikers eventually begin to get the idea of passing to the open person for a clean shot.
